reglay: Top 15 Final Fantasy Characters - #11: Celes Chere (Final Fantasy VI) “Use your own eyes, then decide.” Like my previous pick, Celes lived most of her life in the military and climbed her way to the top. She became a general of the empire and truly felt like she was protecting her country, up until things went horribly awry.  Unlike others, though, Celes’ power isn’t entirely her own. She was “augmented” with magical abilities as a child, meaning that her superficial strength is at least partially artificial. Despite this, she doesn’t fall into angst over being engineered into a weapon. She embraces the power she’s been granted as a gift, and eventually utilizes it for the force of good.  The main reason I like Celes so much is her believable courage in the face of really terrifying things. Things like the country she’s served her whole life falling apart, her own position being tainted and destroyed, her new allies distrusting and disliking her, and then finally the whole world crumbling right before her eyes. She’s not totally stoic, no — she freezes up, mopes, even attempts suicide. She’s hardly the cold-headed “badass” a lot of people seem to want in a “strong character”. But I think those so-called weaknesses of hers really make her eventual resolve to keep fighting much more convincing and inspiring. Not to mention, who else can say their impromptu opera singing helped save the world, right?
